Fitness Without Limits

Where every ability finds strength, every challenge meets opportunity, and every athlete discovers their potential

Our Story

Fitness Was Never Designed for Everyone

For too long, fitness has been treated as something reserved for people who fit the traditional model—a person who can follow fast-paced instructions, navigate a busy gym, tolerate sensory overload, or exercise without individualized support.

But what about the autistic teenager who wants to be strong?
The young adult with developmental disabilities who wants to exercise with friends?
The older adult rebuilding confidence after illness?
The child who has never felt successful in sports?

The problem was never a lack of ability.

The problem was that fitness wasn’t designed with everyone in mind.

A Different Vision

ABL Fitness was founded by Karen Hurley, a physical therapist with more than 20 years of experience working alongside neurodiverse individuals and people with disabilities.

Throughout her career, Karen witnessed something remarkable.

When exercise was adapted to an individual’s communication style, learning preferences, sensory needs, and physical abilities, people didn’t just participate—they thrived.

They became stronger.

More confident.

More independent.

Healthier.

Yet after therapy ended, families were often left with nowhere to go. Traditional gyms weren’t prepared to provide the support many individuals needed, leaving a gap between healthcare and lifelong wellness.

ABL Fitness was created to bridge that gap.

More Than Adaptive Fitness

Today, ABL Fitness is a nonprofit fitness and wellness organization dedicated to making evidence-based physical activity accessible to everyone.

Grounded in the American College of Sports Medicine’s Exercise is Medicine® initiative, we combine expertise in physical therapy, exercise science, adaptive fitness, and individualized coaching to create programs where every participant can succeed.

Our programs serve children, teens, adults, and older adults at every stage of life. Whether someone is developing athletic skills through Kids Ninja Fitness, participating in adaptive fitness, managing a chronic health condition, pursuing healthy aging, or seeking individualized coaching, we believe every person deserves access to safe, evidence-based exercise in an environment where they are supported and encouraged to succeed.

Whether someone joins Adaptive Fitness, Kids Ninja Fitness, Stronger for Life, Personal Training, or Special Olympics Powerlifting, our purpose remains the same:

To help every individual build strength, confidence, independence, and lifelong health.

Why We Became a Nonprofit

As ABL Fitness grew, one reality became impossible to ignore.

Many of the people who needed our programs the most faced financial barriers that limited access to quality fitness opportunities.

We knew our mission was bigger than operating a successful business.

We wanted to remove barriers, expand access, partner with healthcare providers and community organizations, support families through scholarships, and build a model that could improve lives for generations to come.

Transitioning to a nonprofit allowed us to focus on what has always mattered most—not maximizing revenue, but maximizing impact.

Aiming Beyond Limits

Our name reflects our philosophy.

ABL—Aiming Beyond Limits—means we do not define people by their diagnosis, disability, or perceived limitations.

Instead, we believe limitations often exist within environments that fail to provide the right support.

When fitness is individualized, evidence-based, and built on trust, every person has the opportunity to move, grow, belong, and thrive.

Because fitness truly is without limits.

Our Revolutionary Approach

Redefining what’s possible in adaptive fitness

Neuro-Affirming Design

We build programs around how brains actually work, not how we wish they worked. Our environment honors different processing styles, communication preferences, and sensory needs as natural variations, not deficits to overcome.

Strength-Based Methodology

We identify and build upon each athlete’s unique strengths rather than focusing exclusively on challenges. This positive psychology approach creates sustainable motivation and measurable progress.

Community Integration

Fitness happens in relationship. Our peer mentorship model and inclusive class structure ensure that social connection and community building are integral to the fitness experience, not separate from it.

ABL Fitness is a nonprofit fitness organization serving children, teens, adults, and older adults of all abilities. While we are known for our expertise in adaptive fitness, neurodiversity, and inclusive programming, we also welcome individuals without disabilities who are looking for a more personalized, supportive, and evidence-based approach to fitness.

What truly sets ABL Fitness apart is that we focus on the whole athlete. We believe lasting success comes from more than exercise alone. Our programs combine evidence-based fitness with individualized coaching, adaptive strategies, motor development, confidence building, social connection, and meaningful relationships to help every participant reach their fullest potential.

We prioritize trust first, knowing that fitness success follows when athletes feel safe, understood, supported, and appropriately challenged. Every program is individualized to meet participants where they are while helping them build strength, independence, resilience, and lifelong healthy habits.
